cannot get notification envelope or sound when new mail arrives

having troubles not getting any notifications when new mail arrives. i have
gone into the settings and everything seems fine, all the boxes are all
checked. i still cant work out why i dont get a sound or an envelope when i
get new mail.
does anyone know how i could fix this??

The sound is controlled via Control Panel.
Your icon might just be hidden in the system tray in XP. Go into Start |
Properties ... ensure the new email notification is set to always show.
