It doesn't really matter that it plays in WMP on both drives.
PPT will look for the "lowest" letter drive when playing CD tracks. So if
you have CD/DVD drives as drives D and E, PPT will use the one labeled D.
That's why I suggested trying the other drive.
Since PPT doesn't see the drive when you put it in the other one, you're
right, that's not the issue. I can't think what would be, though.
If you go to Start|Run and type mplay32.exe, then File|Open and navigate
to
the CD and choose a track and hit Play, does it play?

Yes, but when I put in in the other drive Powerpoint does not even see
it.
I
cannot select the track and minutes. Again the cd plays well with
WMPlayer
from both drives.

Do you have two CD/DVD drives in the Dell? If so, try putting the CD
in
the
other drive.

I am trying to insert a CD track in a slide. It works fine in my IBM
ThinkPad
laptop but in my Dell tower the drive spins and the timer advances
but
I do
not get any sounds. The cd plays well in Win Media player. Sounds
from
files
including tracks ripped from CDs work fine. I am using PowerPoint
2003
with
all the latest updates.
