Cannot hide column "cannot shift objects off sheet"

When I try to hide a column with the regular procedure (select the column,
Format, Column, Hide) I get the message "Cannot shift objects off sheet" and
the column doesn't hide.

What does this mean and why is it happening?

Probably Comments or Objects interfering.
