cannot import email addresses from excel spreadsheet

I lost all of my contacts, and when trying to import from an excel
spreadsheet (exported from Outlook contacts at an earlier date), all
information imports EXCEPT the email addresses. I am using Microsoft Office
2003. Please assist.
