Cannot in any Office programme access File/Open or File/Save

All Office programmes will open but none of them will allow me to use
File/Open - if I click F/O I simply get an hourglass and the system hangs. I
can open a file by double clicking a Word/Excell etc document in File Manager
(my Computer) but I cannot then access File/Save As.

I restored the computer to two days before the above started and I could use
al programmes normally. When I closed down and then re-started same problem.
