Cannot Insert Table Of Contents

R

rustyfender04

Hi,

For some reason I cannot insert a table of contents after viewing the Office
demo. I keep getting an error message: Error! No table of contents entries
found.

It seems like a cut and dried process, but I must be doing something wrong.

I am using Office 2003, XP Home w/sp2.

Thanks.

Hi rustyfender04,

The default TOC insertion process only works correctly if your document has headings defined using Word's inbuilt Heading Styles
1-3. Evidently your document has none.

Thanks.

Can that be remedied without re-typing the entire report?

Hi rustyfender04,

Yes - simply attach Word's Heading Styles to your existing headings. You do this by selecting the heading then choosing the
appropriate Heading Style from the formatting toolbar. You may need to reformat the Heading Styles to suit your layout requirements,
but it shouldn't be a big task.

Well, I've made some progress so far.

Word listed my TOC with four headings...

Introduction. - 1 -

Discussion. - 2 -

Conclusion. - 6 -

Works Cited. - 7 -

But I was not able to include any sub-headings without Word including the
whole paragraph in the TOC. I'm at a loss as to how to fix this.

Regards,

Hi rustyfender04,

That's how it's supposed to be - the sub-headings need to be a separate paragraph from the text they're associated with.
