Cannot install compatibility pack

I have Windows XP and Office 2003 with the latest updates. I tried to install
the Microsoft compatibility pack for the Office 2007 formats. It does not
work. I get the message: “ There are no products affected by this package
installed on this systemâ€. So I still cannot read .docx files. Ideas?
