Cannot install/remove 2007 Compatibility Pack

S

SharonF

I am running Office Professional 2003. After successfully downloading the
2007 Compatibility Pack (FileFormatConverters v. 12.0.6015.5000), I receive
the following message when try to run or remove the program: This patch
package could not be opened. Verify that the patch package exists and that
you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a
valid Windows Installer patch package.

While Add/Remove programs shows the program as installed, I cannot open 2007
files, but do see the "Convert from" dialog box and then receive a file
error.

I get the same error as above if I try to remove the Compatibility Pack.

Can you help, please? Thanks.

I have tried to uninstall/reinstall the pack several times. I have found a
log file that may help (I hope):

Hello Sharon and Peter,
I have the same problem. I need to uninstall this compatibility pack so I
can reinstall the correct one, and Microsoft wants to charge me $80 for the
priviledge of getting one of their technicians to fix a problem they created.
The normal Control Panel uninstall function just doesn't work, and I know
there is a way around this, but I don't remember what the technician, the
last time I had a similar problem, did to remove such a knotted up file.
Your help/insights would be greatly appreciated.
Regards, Lee

Hello Sharon and Peter,
Problem FIXED!! Amazingly simple, too. I checked another thread about
uninstalling problems, and found that Method 2 on this post got rid of the
pack, and then I was able to install the correct compatibility pack and now
can open all 2007 files on Pro 2003. Check out method 2
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/555175. You'll need, I think,
to make sure you have Office Update SP3 installed as well, but it does work
fine. Why the folks at Microsoft couldn't give me this easy fix--after hours
of grief and frustrating phone calls--is beyond me...makes me want to go to
Open Source. Good luck

Lee, thanks for the ray of hope. I installed Windows Installer v 4.5 for XP
and restarted by PC, but unfortunately, when I try to uninstall the
Compatibility Pack, I still get the the message that the patch can't be
opened. So frustrating.
