cannot open 2007 attachment using office 2003 w\2007 compatiblity

Now this is driving me nuts! I received a new laptop with a trial version of
office 2007. I removed office 2007, then installed office 2003 w\SP3. Then
installed compatibility pack from microsoft. Now when i try to open offie
2007 attachments I get "This action is only valid for products that are
currently installed" Can anyone help us out? I searched all over the WEB
and cannot find something to make this GO AWAY! Any suggestions.
