Cannot open attachments directly through outlook

I'm having trouble opening Microsoft Word Documents attached to email
directly through Microsoft Outlook 2003. It keeps asking me what program I
want to use to open the document then will not open it even after I choose.
I recall a fix in Outlook express that required editing registry keys to
open Power Point files. Does anyone have any idea how to fix this little
mess?
