Cannot open documents and spreadsheets

When I click on a document or spreadsheet directly, Word or Excel opens up
with this error message: "There was a problem sending the command to the
program."

If I click OK, the program stays open, but there is no document or
spreadsheet open. In order to open a doc/xls, I have to open it from within
the program.

How do I fix it so the shortcuts work again?

Have you tried doing a Repair Installation on Office?
What OS are you running?
