cannot open large files

sanman99

hi, i am using powerpoint (office 2000) in win98 in a laptop compaq
presario (128 Mb RAM). no problems with very small files, but i cannot
open even a 4 Mb powerpoint file (same problem with word files). i
have already enlarged the virtual memory, erased the tmp files, and
defragmented the hard disk, but the problem persists. "system
properties" says that there are 124 Mb free. any suggestions?

What happens when you try to open larger-than-4-MB files? Do you get an
error message or anything?

it freezes, and i get the "this program is not responding"
(same thing with word).

What happens when you try to open larger-than-4-MB files? Do you get an
error message or anything?

Are the files on your harddrive, or are they on removable media -- maybe a
USB drive or a network drive?

How are you opening the files? Double-clicking on the harddrive?

I wonder if opening PPT and then using File | Open would work any better?

Windows 98 and Office 2000, right? I think 128MB RAM is probably not very
much. But the 4MB limit seems very odd. I keep thinking about FAT drives vs
NTFS ones, but I don't know enough about that to know if it would cause
these problem. I would think not, as I know I used to have humongous files,
especially when I used Win98 / PPT 95.

Sorry to chime in....
i have already enlarged the virtual memory,
Set the virtual memory to 'allow windows to manage it'

Then stop any un-necassary (I struggle with the spelling of that word)....
programs from running.

Try temporarily disabling your Anti Virus software.

And a question for you... does it have this problem on all ppt files over
4mb or just this particular one?

cheers
