I'm gonna make a wild guess here and say Vista Business. Or maybe its the
"high" you get after you install Vista and see that purdy user interface?

Anyway, Rob, you really need to give us a bit more to go on here. Throw us a
bone, will ya? Tell us how you're trying to start the Office applications.
Are you clicking on shortcuts? Have you tried launching the applications by
typing their names in the start menu search? Have you tried double-clicking
on an Excel or other Office document in Explorer to see if you can make the
application start in that manner? Do you really mean that Excel, for
instance, can only be opened when you've booted the OS to Safe Mode?

It also wouldn't hurt to tell us a bit about the hardware this is running
on. Is it marginal for the OS and software, or is it a newer system with lots
of memory? Have you seen any error messages pertaining to your attempts to
start the software (like in the Event Viewer)?

You might also read the information at that link that JoAnn has in her sig.
It's really necessary to give us some information. Otherwise, we're more in
the dark than you are. We're not even sure what you mean by "vista buz". See
what I mean?

I like your second guess. Kind of a Cheech and Chong version of Windows,
man. Far out! ;-)

I appear to having a similar problem.

Windows Vista Biz, Office 2007.

Programs run fine if I click VISTA "Start" and ALL PROGRAMS and then
go to the office folder and the specific Office app. But if I click
the VISTA "Start" and click either the most recent icon (say Excel) or
type Excel and select the program from the results, nothing happens.

Other non-microsoft programs work fine.

Anyone else seeing this?

I have seen a wide variety of odd MS Office 2007 shortcut shortcomings
reported under Vista, and I have experienced some myself. In my case the Open
Microsoft Office Document and the Create New Microsoft Office Document
shortcuts were the most affected adversely. They just didn't work. Period.

The other Microsoft Office shortcuts for the individual applications worked
from the Programs list, but they would NOT work if I pinned them to the start
menu or or quick launch bar. They also wouldn't launch if I tried to start
them through the search function.

I wound up deleting all of the shortcuts created by the MS Office
installation routine and manually creating shortcuts directly to the
executables. This happened on both of my personal machines and on four test
systems!

All of these systems had installations of MS Office 2007 Professional, Visio
Professional 2007, and OneNote 2007. Not a single other non-Microsoft
application suffered this problem. None of the other applications make the
peculiar type of shortcut that MS creates with their installation routine,
either. I suspect that this is more than coincidence. And I think that they
ought to darn well fix it. They should surely know how to install their own
applications in their own operating system so that their shortcuts work
properly.

However, if you think about it, fixing this issue retrospectively could be
pretty hard to do. If I'm right, the entire issue revolves around their
installation routine. There isn't a lot that a hotfix or service pack can do
about a routine that complex considering the resources it requires to run. I
guess they could create a tool that examines the installation catalog,
deletes all shortcuts it finds that are associated with the Office apps, and
then creates a whole new set -- correctly this time.

But, frankly, I suggest that you not hold your breath. Just blow away the
shortcuts the installation routine created and make your own set. They'll
work just fine.
