cannot open or save office documents

M

malcDT

When i attempt to open an old file or wish to save as to a folder, the
default my documents folder opens but i cannot open any sub folders. Cursor
changes to hour glass but system just hangs.

This happens in word, excell and powepoint so it seems to be a common
function within office that is disabled or corrupted.

Office suite is 2003 professional
OS is Windows XP Pro

Windows explorer wirks correctly as does Wordpad.

Office suite has been completely uninstalled and reinstalled with no change
to problem.

I would prefer to correct problem rather than carry out a repair install of
XP.

Windows Update KB908531 has been reported as the culprit causing the
problems. Those who remove it find it clears up the problem. Of course,
with automatic update enabled, it will continue downloading.

Same thing has happened to me. How do I remove Windows Update KB908531?
Thanks for the help.

This is incredible. I have exactly the same problem which for me coincided
with opening an email word document that was rather complicated and I blamed
the problem on it. I had earlier sent the document to a friend to view and
when they reported the same problem, I thought it must be a virus in the
document. This has cost me a full day of work and nearly $200 to run
diagnostics on my computer. Thank goodness I checked this site first. I have
never been here before and have never done anything like this before I am
what might be called the antithesis of a computer knowledgeable user. Thank
you very much for posting this information. I will try the suggested solution
immediately.

I tried to report this to Microsoft using the (800) phone number listed on
the site, but that caused over half an hour of frustration. First they gave
me a case number and transferred me to somewhere else-- my guess is India--
and I spent over a half an hour, most of it on hold.

Finally, I kept telling him that several people had this problem. The man
wanted me to change my registry entries, which I thought was probably a bad
idea. When we went through folder after folder in the registry looking for a
list of numbers and got to the bottom where no numbers were, he just asked me
if he could close my case. I won't try to help Microsoft again. <g> -- Pat

BUT if you leave on automatic updates, it gets replaced.
They got us every which way.
I am about to try OpenOffice.

You must have talked to the same person I did. I also paid for the call that
did nothing for me and then called Hewlett Packard (windows support person
told me it must be a problem with the computer) and HP did a diag. on my
computer and no, it is Microsoft. I just unistalled my program and
reinstalled it and it still does not work but I am finding some valuable
information in here that I will try.

BTW, the update was re-released Tuesday April 25th, supposedly with the
fixes built in.
