Cannot open shared document

Luke

I have a user who cannot open certain documents on a
shared folder in Word 97. It states that the document is
in use by a "Prefered user" - whatever that means - and
asks if she wants to make a copy.

She answers yes, but then it is unable to open the
document.

Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks!

Does "prefered user" have edit and/or delete priveleges in that folder? If
not, give him/her those privileges (also other users). Often these folders
are set up giving people permission to write to the folder and save files
there, but not to edit and/or delete. If that is the case, when user1
creates or opens a file there, Word will create an owner locking file in the
same directory. This file is normally deleted when the user closes the file
but if the user doesn't have deletion priveleges, it stays there, telling
everyone (including the original user1) that the file is in use by user1.

See the MVP FAQ: <URL: http://www.mvps.org/word/> which is awesome!
