cannot open template (.dotx)

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)

I created a template (.dotx) and need to edit it again. However, everytime when I open it, it opens a new .doc. I am new to the Mac world, so I am not sure if there is something special I need to do. In windows, I would "right click" to open the the menu, and then click OPEN. This would open the template instead of a new .doc. However, when I do this on my mac, it still opens a .doc.
Please advise on how to open the actual .dotx

Use File> Open from within Word, navigate to the directory where the
template is stored.
