Cannot Publish to the Web - Vista

S

Sarah

My problem is getting my web site published to the web. I have had the site
for several years. It was made with Publisher, and I had not problem
uploading to the web - until I got a new computer. Here’s the info.:

Old computer: Windows XP, IE 7, Publisher 2007. On that computer I could
click File, Publish to the Web, click My Network Places, choose appropriate
network place, click open, put in username & password, click save at next
screen where my network place is listed in “save in†and index is listed at
the bottom for file name. Then it tells me that the file index.htm already
exists, and it asks me if I want to replace it. I click Yes. Then it tells me
that Publisher has created a filtered HTML version of this publication and
some other stuff and I click OK. Then it indicates that it is working. I look
on the Internet, and the web site is updated.

New computer: Windows Vista, IE 7 (I did upgrade to 8 but took it off.),
Publisher 2007. I click File, Publish to the Web, then I click on the name of
the network place under folders. The file name at the bottom is index. The
top box says ftp://orangeburghighschool1971.com/ I click save. Then a
messages pops up that says that index.htm already exists, and it asks if I
want to replace it. I said yes. It tells me that Publisher has created a
filtered HTML version of this publication and some other stuff and I click
OK. Then it asks for a user name and password. Then it starts working. Then
it asks for user name and password again. Then I get the message that
Publisher could not save the file to the web. Check your URL or network
connection and try again. On other occasions, it acted differently. It would
only ask for the user name and password once and then it would work forever
before it would tell me that it could not connect.

Other information that might help: I called Godaddy and talked to them for
quite a while. They could not help me. I could use their FTP, but I have a
form on my site that I really need, and it doesn’t support forms. Filezilla
was recommended, so I downloaded that, but I couldn’t understand how to do it
at all. I am planning a class reunion and am getting new information almost
every day that needs to be updated to the web site, so I need help fast. I
decided to send my file to my old computer with a flash drive and upload it
from the old computer, but I got the same message as I did on the new
computer when I tried to upload. Yet I can still upload the old original file
on the old computer. I have worked and worked on this and am getting nowhere.

Sarah,

As you now have Vista, it is my understanding that you should use a program
called FileZilla to publish your Publisher-created website.

Spike supplied the answer below to a similar question (see it on page 5):

There are rumors that Vista is not friendly with publish to the web. It
wasn't all that friendly in XP when I used it there. A recommendation from
my hosting service was to use FileZilla,.
http://filezilla-project.org/download.php

With filezilla you publish to your hard drive and then FTP to the host
server.

Okay, so I need to use Filezilla, which I have downloaded and could not
figure it out at all. So, now my question is how do I get help with that? The
wizard asked questions that I had no clue how to answer. Is there a Filezilla
for Dummies? LOL BTW, thanks for your quick reply.

Unfortunately Geoffrey's advice to use FileZilla will not work in your case
as you are using a form that is currently dependent upon FrontPage Server
Extensions to process the form. If you use FTP uploading protocol this will
corrupt the FPSE and the form on your site will no longer work. You must use
HTTP uploading or change the form handler. You may need to uninstall and
reinstall the FPSE.

Spike does have some experience with using a different form handler at
GoDaddy and might be able to tell you how to change the configuration of
your form. In that case you could read the directions on how to use
FileZilla at http://filezilla.sourceforge.net/documentation/ and use FTP
uploading.

Reference: Aplus.net: How do I upload with Filezilla:
http://www.apluskb.com/scripts/How_do_I_upload_with_answer3668.html
This article has some good screenshots that may help you understand how to
use FileZilla.

FileZilla Instructions:
http://www.siteground.com/tutorials/ftp/filezilla.htm

These additional references on how to use FileZilla are not exactly the same
with GoDaddy, and you might check the GoDaddy support section. It used to
have a good article on how to use FileZilla. And you might read the
reference material on the GoDaddy site about there form handler if you do
want to switch to FTP uploading protocol.

Otherwise you need to learn how to map your network drive and use HTTP
uploading.

Prepare, publish, and maintain your Publisher Web site:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/publisher/HA100947601033.aspx
Pay particular attention to the instructions for FTP uploading in Vista. You
can probably modify these to use HTTP and mapping a network drive. You could
also ask GoDaddy how to do this and then you would publish to your hard
drive and drag and drop your files to your server.

Good luck.

David, thanks. I have already read most of the links you provided. Nothing
seems to work like it should no matter what I try. I think I'm screwed. I
need the form, and it was a fluke that I figured out how to do it in the
first place. I know someone who can probably help me with Filezilla, so I
thought I was going to get this resolved. I didn't know that the form would
be an issue through Filezilla, too.

Sorry David and Sarah, I should have known better than to meddle with a query
concerning Pub 2007. I was just trying to help by pointing to previous
answers.

Someone had a list that said that Publisher 2003 was compatible with Vista. I
would certainly be willing to go back to 2003 if I could get my publishing to
work. Does anyone know if you can publish to the web from Publisher 2003?
Since someone mentioned that Publish to the Web didn't work well with Vista,
I guess the answer is no, but I'm grasping at straws here. I tried sending an
e-mail to Godaddy last night and when I submitted, it went to Page Not Found
or something similar. I am really getting stressed about this. I have got to
get it fixed. I'm going to call Godaddy again tonight, but the first person
that I talked to did not even know that I could not use their ftp if I had a
form on my site. I have asked everyone that I can think of to help me with
this, but most people are not that familiar with Publisher.

Also, I was wondering if you could save a publisher file as a previous
version, like save a 2007 file in the 2000 format? I know that you can do
that in Word.

D

Don Schmidt

Getting your website files on to the server could be done with a File
Transfer Program (ftp).

An excellent ftp is FileZilla, obtainable from
http://sourceforge.net/projects/filezilla/

I believe you can save most any Publisher file to a previous version by
doing
Save as...
Then select from the drop down menu the version of Publisher wanted.

BUT! You may loose some formatting saving to a previous version.

S

Sarah

I can ftp the site. That is no problem. The problem is that the form on the
site does not work if I ftp the site. I have to use another way (HTTP) or do
something about the form handler. I don't know how to do either of those. If
2003 would publish my web site and the form would work, I would be delighted.
I think it was originially designed in Pub 2000. Maybe later I upgraded to
2003 and then to 2007, not sure.

Godaddy supports PHP mailers
Entirely FTP upload no problem
I am using PHP straight forward mailers and an authentication code mailer on
godaddy

I stay away from the default mailer using Front Page Extensions as the email
address is accessible to sniffers
The PHP mailers and Godaddys own mailer hide the email address

I called once, and the girl couldn't help me. She tried to help me ftp, and I
mentioned about having the form, and she thought that the form should work. I
tried to e-mail them, and when I submitted it, it went to a page not found or
something similar. I am going to try again tonight.

S

Sarah

Spike, I wanted you to show up. They said that you could probably help me.
Since I set up this site years ago, I don't know how I figured out how to
even do a form. And I've apparently grown dumber with age. I guess I used
Front Page Extensions because that's all I could find out how to do. It's
worked perfectly in the past. You mention PHP mailers and an authentification
code. I really don't know what you're talking about. Could you explain how to
go about this as if you were talking to a first grader? I would be so
grateful. I am going to try to call Godaddy again. You would be the hero if
you could help me. I have posted on several forums and have had one other
person trying to help me.

S

Sarah

David, you would not believe the time that I have invested in this, but I
don't understand most of what I read. And then all of the answers and
suggestions just start running together, from this forum and others. I'm
sorry to be a burden. I have read all of the links that people have sent me
and many others, too. I have other major things going on here that are
interfering with my concentration. I will re-read and see if I can understand
where to go from here.

DavidF

Sarah,

To reiterate, the problem is not the version of Publisher, it is Vista vs.
XP. Vista requires mapping a network drive in Windows Explorer in order to
use HTTP uploading protocol...which is required if you use FPSE to power the
form. The question you needed to research with GoDaddy was how to map the
network drive to your server so that you could use HTTP uploading protocol
and FPSE.

I also suggested that you could change your form so that it would work with
a different form handler than FPSE and then use FTP uploading. The articles
about forms explains how to change the submit form properties and GoDaddy
has instructions on how to use their form handlers. If you are not willing
to invest some time reading the information and figuring this out on your
own, then if you ask Spike, he may be willing to walk you through switching
the form handler.

DavidF

S

Spike

Sarah

I looked at what I think is your form page
http://orangeburghighschool1971.com/index_files/page6.htm
If so you need to take some other actions before you get involved in making
the form work

The links do not show up and some blocks to check have not instructions next
to them on the right.
I am guessing that you do not have the latest service pack or have not
ungrouped your objects so that your pages will be compatible with the latest
technology. I see that you went back to IE 7. OK for you but the rest of
the world is turning with IE 8.

A quick fix for this situation is:

If you are using Publisher 2003 or earlier

Create a web site with nav bars etc.
Saved web site as "My web site.pub"
With the pub page open
Ctrl a (selects all)
Arrange > Ungroup
This insures that all groups are ungrouped
This must be done on ALL pages individually
Re-Saved using Save As "My web site NBUG.pub"
I take the step to "Save As" so that when I shut down publisher and I get a
prompt to save my changes I do NOT overwrite the master file "My web
site.pub" accidentally.
Publish to the web
FTP to the server
Web site works using IE 8

If a change, update is required or a page is added
Open with "My web site.pub"
Make changes
Follow the above suggestions
BTW NBUG = "Nav Bars Un Grouped"

If you are using Publisher 2007 try installing SP3 or just follow the above
instructions

+++++++++++
Get your page compatible with IE 8 and then we will get your form working
+++++++++++

This is the form: http://orangeburghighschool1971.com/index_files/page6.htm

After reading, I did go to form properties for the submit button on the
information page. The choices were to save the data in a file on my Web
server , to send data to me in e-mail and to use a program from my ISP. Right
now, I have #2 checked. I'm guessing I need to change it to number 3?

I went on Godaddy and looked at the form information, but I did not know
exactly what to choose. I searched for authentication code on Godaddy, and
nothing came up. I'm getting closer, but I don't know why I just can't get
it. Thanks so much for trying to help me. I think if I can get the form
situation straight, that I can use GoDaddy's ftp, right? It did update the
site when I tried it a few days ago, but the form wouldn't work.

Depending if you have a windows account with godaddy or a Linux account you
need to establish the email address that you want the form to be sent to.
Read the following for your account
http://help.godaddy.com/search?q=form+mail (help files:)

In publisher you need to select:
Use a program file from my ISP
In the action line enter the path for the mailer
Such as /cgi/gdform.cgi
Look at your server using filezilla to see what form you have installed and
what folder it is in. In the above example the folder name is "cgi" and
the form mailer program is "gdform.cgi"

When you use ftp on a site with FPSE enabled (like for your forms) ftp
breaks the extensions, you can ask GoDaddy to repair FPSE (the Front Page
Server Extensions) and go back to publishing via the http: method.

Or you can switch to a form handler that GoDaddy supports...there should be
documentation on their website on how to implement this - see Spike's
responses.
