cannot read one instance of this recurring appointment

When changing a single occurence in a series the users follows the correct
steps for changes. After trying to save the changes the user gets the
following error:
"cannot read one instance of this recurring appointment. Close any open
appointments and try again, or recreate the appointment".
Any ideas on what this is?
