Cannot receive e-mail

I have a new laptop running Win Xp Pro and have set up
Outlook 2000 via a server. I can send e-mails OK but
cannot receive any. The old machine running Win 2000 has
the same settings and works OK, any ideas how to sort this
out?

Check your outgoing server settings - it sounds like your authentication is
missing.

the (insert latest virus name here) virus, all mail sent to my personal
account will be deleted without reading.

After searching google.groups.com and finding no answer, Mike asked:
