This can be caused by an ill-formed message in your POP3 mailbox. Outlook
times out before it can get the message downloaded. There are a couple of
things you can try. The easiest is to connect to your mail service with a
web interface, if your ISP provides one, to check for such a message. If
you find one, delete it and the remainder should download with Outlook.
Then, you can increase your server timeout value on the Advanced tab of your
account properties pages. Finally, you can try using regedit to add the
following DWORD key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\POP3SVC\Parameters\CheckPop3Tail

Set the value to "1". Do this as a last resort.

The last option (that you mention as a last resort) is an *Exchange
Server* setting, not something that can be useful in Outlook.

Good to know. The messages that reference that registry key were never, in
my opinion, clear that it applied to Exchange only. I wondered, but wasn't
sure.
