Cannot run Word after virus

I run Windows XP and Word supplied with Works Suite 2003.
Word was working OK until I had a virus infection of some
kind and then when I tried to run Word it ran through an
install routine and then displayed a message saying:

'Problem with Shortcut

This patch package could not be opened. Verify that the
patch package exists and that you can access it, or
contact the application vendor to verify that this is a
valid Windows installer patch package.'

I have tried to reinstall from the original Works Suite
CD without success. I get similar messages referring to
the absence of a patch.

My system is fully updated from the Windows Update site.

Can anybody help please?

you first need to run a scan of norton on your pc then you
will need to access your quarantine files this will
display any traces of the virus that is left then you need
to delete them all after doing this try reinstalling word
then shutdown your computer and restart it again and it
should work fine, but if not it then is not a word problem
it is a windows prob and you will need to reinstall your
operating system, but if your running xp it should give
you the option of a repair insted of installing from
scrach. hope that helps!!

Thank you for that. I have cleared out the virus and
attempted to reinstall Word without success so It seems
to be a Windows XP problem.
