cannot "save as" excel web page

Hi, I'm trying to help my sister solve a problem with a
webpage that links to an excel worksheet. The worksheet
opens within Internet Explorer, but 'File'-'Save As'
causes a "connect to" domain prompting username and
password to popup.

Clicking 'Cancel' I would expect to then be prompted for
a location to save the file, but nothing. I can never
get to the normal "file save as" dialog box to choose a
location.

Is it that the default "save as" location needs to be
changed so that it doesn't try to save it back to the
hosting location?

Thanks,
Steven

What's the URL and what version of FrontPage/Office is this happening with?

If you're trying to have it saved on a "client" machine,
( aka visitors machine ) they need to right click a link
to the file and then select "Save as..." to save a copy
on their machine.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the reply. As I'm not too knowledgeable about
FrontPage, I'm not sure what an HTA is, but I'll look it
up.

Doing a "File-Save" would seem to be a security breech,
but a "File-Save As" is the way to save a copy somewhere
else, right? I can certainly save the document by right-
clicking the link and choosing "Save Target As", but I'd
like to be able to do it this way too.

I am running Windows XP Pro and Office 2003 - when I click on the Fill Out
In Excel link, I get a File Download dialog box, prompting me to Open or
Save the spreadsheet - when I click Save, it doesn't cause a "connect to"
domain prompting username and password to popup.

Is this web site being maintained from your sister's PC?

If the visitor / client has Excel on their computer,
clicking the link will open the file in Excel. Once opened
and edited they can't save it back to your server.
They can however click File > Save as.. and save it to
their machine ( if they have Excel, if not it will simply download )

Your best bet is to advise them to right click and Save
as, then open it, edit it, print it and fax it providing
they have Excel. You can't assume they do.

imho, the best way is to have them submit the "online form"

The XLS file once downloaded either by right clicking, save target as or
save as when open in the browser (Excel), the file can not be open by double
clicking. I had to open Excel first, then browse to the downloaded file to
open it.

Also remove all spaces from folder and file names, as some browser can not
handle links with them.

As for your online form, if you are also sending the data to an email
address (without using PGP), this is not secure.

The website is maintained offsite. It seems that people
have different experiences with this link. Where I am, I
can't save the file except by right-clicking the link.
Perhaps your browser is setup so that Excel links open in
a separate window rather than within IE. We're trying to
make it work for everybody, so I think if we have people
right-click the link and choose "save target as", it'll
work for everyone. Thanks for the replies.
