Cannot save new files

Is anyone else seeing a problem saving new files from any Office application?
Computer did an automatic upgrade between 4/14 and 4/15, today I can't save
anything new in Office. Existing files - no problem. Also cannot open the
list under File.

Thanks for the quick update Carey, but really - asking people to edit the
registry for a problem that was downloaded with a security patch? I know my
75 year old mother who lives 2300 miles away from me isn't going to be able
to do that. Are you guys going to release an automatic patch?

For friends and family, who aren't regedit kind of users, just create them
either a script or a .reg file that all they have to do is click on.

This hasn't happened in many years, but it's finally happened again: A
Microsoft "Critical update" that is automatically installed by any
computer with automatic updates enabled has "broken" Microsoft Office
and Internet Explorer (and who knows what else) on probably about 50 to
100 million computers. As anyone can tell from this message board, it's
a real mess.

And Microsoft's solution, to manually edit the registry, is totally
unacceptable. Since they created the problem via automatic update, they
need to fix the problem via an automatic live update, and they need to
do it TOMORROW (I'd say today but it's Easter Sunday).

Microsoft needs to understand two things:

1. Most users do not use newsgroups and have no what of finding out
what is going on.

2. Most users are not capable of safely using Regedit.

It's pretty unbelievable to me that this one "got by" and "got out".
The number of people impacted is massive, high tens of millions if not
hundreds of millions, and the consequence is pretty severe also.

Here, here!

I don't care if it is Easter Sunday or not. Microsoft needs to get this
problem fixed immediately!!!!!

There's a registry tweak that you can try to fix your current problem.
Download this zip file & extract & run the reg file.

The easier solution might be to first remove the update and then
turn off automatic updates for a week, that might be long enough to
get the updated updated?

One of my computers had this problem this morning. When I tried my other
computer and my laptop and discovered the same problem, I knew there had to
be some other explanation. Although it is Easter Sunday, MS should be on the
ball with this. It took me all day to find this info - tucked away in a
newsgroup, of all places. I agree that the solution to manually edit the
registry is not acceptable. However, I could not wait for MS to come out
with something and followed the instructions to do it. Fortunately, it
worked and now all 3 of my computers are back to normal.

Barry, I agree completely. My wife began experiencing the problem (couldn't
save anything on any Office product) a couple days ago. Last night (4/17) I
fortunately found this site after Dell told me it would cost $99 for a
one-time support. After reading about the update that caused the problem I
deleted it with the Add/Delete program. It worked fine until my wife started
the computer up again this morning. I've turned off the auto update and am
certainly hoping that Microsoft will fix the problem.
