Cannot sort worksheets

Excel 97
I have several spread/worksheets that have a "column" to
left left of column "A"....it has 3 buttons with "1,2,3"
respectively along the top with "+" & "-" below. I
believe they have something to do with hiding/unhiding
Rows.

The problem is I can't sort any data in the worksheets
that have this mysterious "column". Excel help has
nothing on it...what is this "column" how do i get rid of
it?

What you have is a sheet that has "grouped" rows, and the "outline" symbols
are what you are seeing on the left.

Lookup "Group" and /or "Outline" in the Help menu.

To remove them, select all the rows involved, and then:
<Data> <Group & Outline> <Ungroup>
