Cannot start Excel 2003

I have Office 2003 and XP SP2. If I click on the shortcut to Excel 2003,
Windows Installer starts with the message "preparing to install", then I get
an error message "The installation source for the product is not available.
Verify that the source exists and that you can access it". However, Word
2003 starts ok.

Excel will run if I select the program from the Office11 folder. However, if
I try and run Detect and Repair, I get the same error as before. The same
happens from within Word.

Is there a fix without having to re-install?

Use the cleanup utility and re-install Office. You will not lose any data or
preferences.

I had the identical error, this worked for me. I believe my problem occurred when I
did a disk clean-up and deleted the Office setup files in the temp folder.
