Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. Outlook requires Microsoft Outlook

I have XP home (SP2 & patched).
With IE 7 installed and working. Although Opera is my default browser.

Bought a new phone (windows mobile 5.0) that comes with Outlook 2002.
Installed Outlook. No error messages during install.

When I try to synch my phone the error message "Cannot start Microsoft
Outlook. Outlook requires Microsoft OutlookExpress 4.01 or greater. You can
install Outlook Express by running IE5Setup.exe" is shown.

OE is installed and is the default email client.

Any ideas?

When I right click on the Outlook icon it brings up a page with three tabs
for editing/adding/removing email accounts.
Specifically, what is to configure?
It already recognizes my pop3.

No, if I click the OL icon I get the error message, "Cannot start Microsoft
Outlook. Outlook requires Microsoft OutlookExpress 4.01 or greater..."
So far I have never had OL open - just the above error message.

Sorry if this is a repeat but I didn't see my reply.

No, I have not used OL as of yet - each time I click the OL icon I get the
same error message about needing OE 4.01.

Perhaps run an IE7 repair, how this is done I'm unsure as I havent used any
version of IE for some time.
You could also try an OL repair, you should be able to run this from the OL
cd

My OL install is from an activesync disc included with my phone.
And why they only supply OL 2002 and a very old version of activesync with a
brand new phone, Mr. Gates only knows.
