Cannot turn off Extend Mode in Word 2000

Somehow Extend Mode is continually on. I've tried
everything to turn it off - double clicking EXT button,
pressing ESC and F8. All documents, new and old are in
EXT mode. Is a re-install my only option or is there a
template file or something that I can delete.

FYI, I had to de-install and re-install Word to fix

this, I tried deleting normal.dot and the repair feature
with no success. I also had a problem with another
application which could've been related - maybe a
register was corrupt, they're both ok now.
