Cannot update Word 2004 for Mac

My version of Word 2004 for Mac (an upgrade from Word 98 Macintosh Edition)
is not updating, either through AutoUpdate or freestanding downloads (I am
running it on an G4 iBook under 10.4.11). I have run the Remove Office
programme, reinstalled the software and the updates still don't work. I
always get the message that the updater cannot find the correct version of
the software. In addition, since reinstalling from the original CD, whenever
Word opens, I now get the error message that "an unexpected error occurred
while trying to load the Microsoft Framework library." Any ideas?

Which version areyou trying to update from?? There is no combo update
that will take you straight to the latest, but you can go straight from
11.0 to 11.3.5, then you'll have to install all the remaining updates
one after the other,

Thanks for your message this. I'm trying to update from 11.0. I've tried the
installing the 11.3.3 and the 11.3.5 update, and also tried AutoUpdate, but
get the same error message every time: "The installer could not locate the
correct version of the software required to install this update".

Any ideas about how I could sort this out? Many thanks.

Download all the updaters from 11.3.5 onwards and keep them as files.

Then run the Remove Office utility from your CD or from the Additional Tools
folder.

Then re-install.

The components have gotten themselves out of synchronisation with each
other. The fastest way out of that is to use the tool to Uninstall, then
re-install. Warning: use the tool, or you will end up in a much worse mess
:)

Cheers
