Cannot use Mail Merge in Word 2003 to connect to Excel

Actually, found a solution (?) myself that works...I need
to open the file from within Word and open it in Mail
Merge format. THEN I can do a mail merge.

I've seen nothing about doing this in the "how to's", so
anyone that has more insight would be appreciated.
