Cannot use plus sign in Outlook 2007 phone numbers

No matter what auto-correct functions I turn off I cannot seem to be
able to use the plus (+) sign for my Outlook 2007 phone numbers - copy/
paste does not work either. There used to be an auto-format phone
numbers option somewhere but I can't find it now. I hate it when
Microsoft tries to 'help' me. Anybody has any idea what I could do?
