Cannot use the inbox

I use Outlook 2000.

For two days now I cannot download mail, move mail from my inbox, or delete
mail from my inbox. The problem seemed to start immediately after Norton
Anti-Virus intercepted an infected e-mail. I've run the inbox repair tool and
checked for downloads, and allowed for a larger inbox. I get the feeling its
somethign to do with the .pst file, but I'm not sure how to proceed.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

How big is the .pst file? Have you deleted the offending message from your
webmail? What happens if you turn of Norton scanning?

Post all replies to the group to keep the discussion intact. Due to
the (insert latest virus name here) virus, all mail sent to my personal
account will be deleted without reading.

After furious head scratching, Alastair Two Sheds asked:

How many items in the Inbox and how big is the PST file? (There are file
size and item count limitations for PST files.)

Since you mention Outlook 2000, is it configured in Internet Mail Only or
Corporate/Workgroup mode? (See the second or third line under the Help |
About Microsoft Outlook dialog.)

Hi - thanks for your interest

PST file is 164MB, inbox contains 2196 items. It is set up for internet mail
only - I'm a home user.

Hi - thanks for your interest

The file is 164MB, 2196 items in the inbox, the offending message somehow
never got onto the webmail (they have an anti-virus service). No change if
Norton is switched off. I should have said Outlook won't let me archive the
inbox, but other folders are working as normal.

Well within the file size/item count limitation of PST files.

Try running the Inbox Repair Tool (scanpst.exe) against your *.pst file.

The other thing I would do is consider disabling the scanning of e-mail in
Norton if the above doesn't work. (Norton acts as a proxy between Outlook
and the mail server. So if it gets confused, it can break the retrieving of
e-mail since Outlook talks to it and Norton talks to the server.)
