Can't add multi-level custom enterprise lookup field

I have previously added custom enterprise lookup fields and they work OK. But
now I am trying to add a new custom enterprise lookup field with 2 levels,
and I cannot save it; I get an error message:

"The lookup table could not be saved due to the following reason(s):
One or more code values in the lookup table either do not match the mask
defined for the code or contain more than 255 characters."

Other than the lookup field name and the table entries, all other values are
the defaults:

The field type is "Text"
Code Preview is "*"
Code Mask sequence is "Characters"
Code Mask Length is "Any"
Code Mask Separator is "."

I can save the field if I set all the table entries items at Level 1, but as
soon as I move one of them to Level 2 I get the error.

Can anyone explain why I am getting an error?

How are levels supposed to be used, and how is the code mask used?

Thank you.

Did you specify two lines in the Code Mask? You need to specify a line for
each level of indent in the Lookup Table. Let us know.

Excellent! I didn't realize I had to do that, but now I did and it works.

Thank you very much.
