Can't bold one word at a time on Word 2002

Handyman

We recently switched from word97 to windows xp and word2002. Now when I try to change a word (Be it bolding or font change..any change at all), the change affects the entire document. Even though I highlite only the words I want to change. If I ckick "undo" afterwards I get the desired effect. But I don't want to click undo after every change I make. This is happeneing to everyone in the company... any ideas would be appreciate

Thank you
