Can't change defualt font color Word 2007

Very strange this - my default font color in Word 2007 has changed to
gray from black.

I click the expanding arrow in the bottom right corner of the Font
Group and the font color is set to Automatic. I change it to black
from the color chart and click default.

It tells me I am about to change the default font color to Text 1.

I click OK but when I open a new document it is gray again.

How can I sort this???
