Can't change Page Setup settings

I have Office 97 on a WinXP Pro machine (as is the current
norm in our organization). Can't print from Word on this
particular PC. When I look at Page Setup settings, the
Paper Size is set to Custom, 8" wide and 1" high. When I
change those settings to Letter, 8.5 x 11, and make those
changes the default, the settings don't stay. I have
uninstalled and reinstalled Office, replaced the
Normal.dot template with one from a working machine,
changed printer drivers, and followed Microsoft's
instructions on how to totally uninstall Office 97.
Nothing has worked. Help!!!

Word reads these values from the printer driver, so that's where you should
look for the answer. Try deleting and reinstalling the printer, then go
through all the printer settings carefully.
