Every time I open a new Word document the default is set to 'letter' size. I
have reset the default to A4 several times, but each time I start new
document, the default has changed back.

Open the normal.dot template, and make the change there and then save and
close it.

In addition to the suggestions offered by Doug and Anne, it is usually
helpful to set A4 as the default paper size in the printer Properties.

Thanks Doug, I know I'm going to sound simple - but where do I find this
template? I did a search and came up with nothing. Thanks for your advice.

Thanks Anne. As I've just said to Doug - apologies for sounding simple - but
where is this template? Can't find it! Thanks for your advice.

And if the Windows regional settings were set to a region that uses A4 paper
by default - eg the UK - then the problem shouldn't arise in the first
place.

It is located in a folder that is probaby hidden. The usual location is
c:\documents and settings\[User Name]\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates.
You can check for the location in Word by selecting Options from the Tools
menu and then selecting the File Locations tab. To see hidden folders in
Windows Explorer, select Folder options from the Tools menu in that
application.
