Can't connect to datasource or create address list in Pub 2003

D

Dan

Every time I try to connect to a datasource or create an address list in
Publisher 2003 I receive the error "the operation cannot be completed because
of dialog or database engine failures".

I have tried the suggested detect and repair and all that succeeded in doing
was forcing me to recreate all of my Outlook accounts and rules; Word default
settings, etc. I do not nor have I ever had any problems doing mail merges
in Word, just in Publisher.

From reading through this and various other forums it appears this has been
happening for some time with no answer from Microsoft on the cause or how to
correct it.

Has anyone else been able to find the true cause of this problem and fix it?
All of my drivers are the latest versions available and everything else
works without problems.

I have a rather large catalog to produce and have Publisher on another
computer that can perform a catalog merge but it just doesn't have enough
horsepower to work with my design and chokes.

HELP!!!

It doesn't matter--I've tried SQL 2000, SQL 2005, Access, Excell worksheets,
Word documents and even creating an address list in Publisher.

Everything gives the same error.

When you get this error it usually means a MDAC failure or one of the
components.
The article below is for 2002, but it is relevant to 2003 and your error.

The article has links to the MDAC refresh as well as information on how to
register Jet 4.0. Might download the component checker as well.

It is not an MDAC issue. I can perform mail merges in Word with no problems.

That is the problem--Microsoft does not address this issue for Publisher;
only for Word or Outlook. I have no problems with those applications.

To restate: I cannot create an address list WITHIN Publisher either without
receiving this error. Does this require MDAC?

Does Publisher use MDAC differently than other Office applications that are
working properly?

I followed all of the instructions in that support article and everything is
up to date at the latest level. Publisher just refuses to play in my sandbox
:)

Like I keep repeating, Publisher is the ONLY application having problems on
this computer. All other Office applications work properly. I have numerous
other applications that use Access as a database, including other Office
applications and they all work flawlessly.

The time proven "format and reinstall" method of correcting problems is out
of the question as I have hundreds of applications and ten of thousands of

There has to be a solution as I know I am not the only person to have had
this promlem only in Publisher.

Let me simplify the steps I am taking to get the error.

1. Start Publisher.
2. Create new blank print punlication.
3. From Tools menu, select Mail and Catalog Merge -> Create Address List.

At that point I get the error. This is about as simple as you can get with
a merge project. I want to use a Word document as a datasource but I cannot
open any Word documents from within Publisher, regardless of how they are
formatted table-wise. I tried using an Excel worksheet and cannot open it
either. Both of these files can be opened on another computer with a new
blank presentation but that computer isn't powerful enough to use for
publishing the real publication. I have already tried and it rolls over and
dies quickly after starting the merge due to a lack of resources.

Dan, I have looked at every document I could find that even remotely addresses
your issue. They all come back to MDAC and Jet 4.0.

Try a detect and repair. Look at the ODBC properties in the control panel. Maybe
there is a clue there. Run DrWatson.

I followed all of the instructions in that support article and everything
is
up to date at the latest level. Publisher just refuses to play in my
sandbox
:)

Like I keep repeating, Publisher is the ONLY application having problems on
this computer. All other Office applications work properly. I have
numerous
other applications that use Access as a database, including other Office
applications and they all work flawlessly.

The time proven "format and reinstall" method of correcting problems is out
of the question as I have hundreds of applications and ten of thousands of
files on this computer.

There has to be a solution as I know I am not the only person to have had
this promlem only in Publisher.

I can only suggest repairing or updating the MDAC components.
Could be your Access program needs a detect and repair. By default,
Publisher
creates the mail lists as Access data.

It is not an MDAC issue. I can perform mail merges in Word with no
problems.

That is the problem--Microsoft does not address this issue for
Publisher;
only for Word or Outlook. I have no problems with those applications.

To restate: I cannot create an address list WITHIN Publisher either
without
receiving this error. Does this require MDAC?

Does Publisher use MDAC differently than other Office applications that
are
working properly?

:

When you get this error it usually means a MDAC failure or one of the
components.
The article below is for 2002, but it is relevant to 2003 and your
error.

The article has links to the MDAC refresh as well as information on how
to
register Jet 4.0. Might download the component checker as well.

It doesn't matter--I've tried SQL 2000, SQL 2005, Access, Excell
worksheets,
Word documents and even creating an address list in Publisher.

Everything gives the same error.

What format is your database?

Every time I try to connect to a datasource or create an address
list
in
Publisher 2003 I receive the error "the operation cannot be
completed
because
of dialog or database engine failures".

I have tried the suggested detect and repair and all that
succeeded
in
doing
was forcing me to recreate all of my Outlook accounts and rules;
Word
default
settings, etc. I do not nor have I ever had any problems doing
mail
merges
in Word, just in Publisher.

From reading through this and various other forums it appears this
has
been
happening for some time with no answer from Microsoft on the cause
or
how
to
correct it.

Has anyone else been able to find the true cause of this problem
and
fix
it?
All of my drivers are the latest versions available and everything
else
works without problems.

I have a rather large catalog to produce and have Publisher on
another
computer that can perform a catalog merge but it just doesn't have
enough
horsepower to work with my design and chokes.

HELP!!!

I HAVE run detect and repair to no avail. I have looked at everything I can
find as well. That is what my original post said--there is no information
within Microsoft about this problem even existing with Publisher yet several
forums have threads (without answers) going back at least two or three years
with the same error.

Troubleshooting information for Publisher is so sparse that either (a) it
has no problems (we know that isn't true) or (b) everyone actually uses
PageMaker or InDesign for serious layout and publishing tasks.

Thanks,
Dan

Dan, I have looked at every document I could find that even remotely addresses
your issue. They all come back to MDAC and Jet 4.0.

Try a detect and repair. Look at the ODBC properties in the control panel. Maybe
there is a clue there. Run DrWatson.
