Can't create new records

I recently installed A5v8. I can modify existing records, but when I create
and save a new record, it doesn't show up in the database.

Re-installation doesn't help.

Can you?

Me again. The new record is in the database, as the last record number.
But it can't be found by a search, and it doesn't get alphabetized with
other records.

Help!
