Can't delete headers & footers

G

Greg Smith

In starting a new document in Office 2000 Word, I have
just now encountered a header that takes up the top third
of the page and a footer that is a few lines deep.

I don't want headers and footers and can't delete them or
cut them or anything like that.

I tried to put some type in them to see if they would let
me delete them then, but no.

This is a Windows 98SE computer with 256MB ram and Office
2000.

I ran a new virus scan and came up clean. I ran AdAware
and found a bunch of things to get rid of.

I can call up an old doc and "save as" then take
everything off and make it be a new letter or whatever,
but I can't start a new blank document without these huge
headers.

I am trying to find the disk for this computer to try to
repair, but haven't come up with the correct set yet.

Is my next step to reinstall - or is there another way?

Thanks

Greg

Headers and footers cannot be deleted. They are present in every document,
and represent the area above and below the main document area. While they
can't be deleted, they can be resized. You best bet to accessing these
controls quickly an unambiguously is to choose File - Page Setup - Margins
tab. Headers and footers use the top and bottom margin areas. The normal
size for these areas is 1". So, if you set Top and Bottom to 1", you should
effectively be able to eliminate headers/footers from your document. Note
that this assumes that headers/footers are empty (contain no text) and don't
contain odd formatting (paragraph after spacing, for example) that might
make them take up additional room.

Try File => Page Setup => Layout (tab)

Make sure the vertical alignment is set to "Top" and not "Center."
