Can't delete selected text with backspace key

When i drag and select text and then hit the backspace
key, the text does not delete. It will work if i hit the
delete key though. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Make sure that under Tools, Options, Edit tab the check box is checked for
'typing Replaces Selection' option.
