Can't draw custom borders around text

K

Katrina

I would like to draw a custom border around some text
with lines only at the top and left side. On earlier
versions of Word, I could do this by selecting the text,
going to "Borders and Shading", then clicking on the top
and left border buttons in the diagram (with "custom"
and "apply to text" settings selected). I am now using
Word 2002 on Office XP, and this doesn't work anymore.
Whenever I select any of the individual border buttons,
all of the border buttons are activated. I can only draw
a complete box with four sides around my text or have no
border at all.

Does anyone know how to get around this problem?

Word 2002 handles borders exactly like previous versions. You can put a
border on individual sides of a page, a paragraph, a graphic, or a table
cell. What you can't border selectively is Text.

It appears you can put any kind of border you like around
paragraphs, but not around text within a paragraph. Put
the cursor in the paragraph you want a border around, or
select the several paragraphs to put a border around more
than one. The border will go from margin to margin.

For text within a paragraph, you might try a one-cell
table, set to Autofit to contents, then adjust the table
borders to suit.

You can actually apply a custom border to text using the EQ \x (box) field.
See Word's Help ("Field codes: EQ (Equation) field") for the switches to
select just top and bottom margins.

Hi there! You seem super smart and very informed about Word graphics. I have a problem here that has completely stumped me.

I have a text document that is in 3 column format. I want to put a box in the center of the middle column. However, I have 2 requirements of this box: 1) The text must "break around" the box. In other words, I don't want the text to enter the box, be in front of the box, or behind it either. It will simply be around it. 2) I don't want the box to move. It must be anchored somehow. In other words, when you hit enter, or add text above the box, the box will NOT go down. It remains fixed in the center of the page.

Help!

Insert a text box and set its position relative to the page.

I am experiencing problems with borders as well. I am
trying to put a border on the top of a paragraph. No
matter what thickness or color I select I end up with the
default .5 black. I am using Office XP with Word 2003.
This is aggravating.

You have to select the border style and weight and *then* click on the
diagram to apply it.
