Can't Edit ppt File / "Read Only Embedded Font"

I have a series of PP files I want to edit; however, when
I click to open them, I get a message that says "This
presentation cannot be edited because it contains a read-
only embedded font"

I've tried opening the file via "open-as", but it won't
let me do that either. What can I do to open these files
so they can be edited?

I'm assuming that you are using PowerPoint 2003 and that the presentations were
created in an older version. This is a new
??feature?? of PowerPoint 2003. The work around is to 1) install the needed
fonts on your system and then try to open the files, 2) open the files in an
older version of PowerPoint and save them with a new name and without embedding
fonts. Before doing the latter, it is best to go to Format > Replace Fonts and
replace the special fonts with standard ones like Arial or Times Roman.

OK.. so I'm limited to either finding an older version of
PowerPoint (opening the file / resaving) or, finding the
font. How can I determine what font I am looking for?
The message does not say what the font is that is
embedded? Is there a way to determine what fonts are
used in given powerpoint presentation?

Dear All,

I had this problem yesterdat and I found a solution:
1) Download and Install the OpenOffice from openoffice.org (it is free)
2) Open the PowerPoint file with OpenOffice
3) Save it with another name
4) Close OpenOffice
5) Open the new file created with Microsoft PowerPoint

IMPORTANT NOTE:
a) It is possible that you notice minor changes in the size of objects. I
notice one change in 70 slides, not bad.
b) It is possible that you notice some change in Fonts, but it did not
affect my 70 slide presentation.

Can you verify whether doing this causes animations to get lost? I know that
OpenOffice doesn't support the timeline based animations, but don't know if
it strips them or not....
