Are you referring to built-in AutoText entries or custom AutoText
entries? Did you perhaps save a Word document as Normal.dot? That will
do it. :)

If you did there are a couple of ways to resolve the problem. First
you need to create a new Normal.dot by locating Normal.dot and
renaming it to OldNormal.dot. When Word starts it will create a new
Normal.dot with the default AutoText entries.

Then you can copy any customizations your new Normal.dot via the
Organizer (Tools/Templates and Add-Ins). Or you can copy the AutoText
entries from the new Normal.dot to your OldNormal.dot, delete the new
Normal.dot you just created and rename OldNormal.dot back to
Normal.dot.

Sorry but your suggestion didn't work, but I did go into template add in and
all my autotext entries, including the stuff I want to insert. However when
I click on autotext I just get "not responding" and obviously then lose my
work.

To clarify, when you create a new Normal.dot and then attempt to open
the AutoText menu Word hangs?

Tried your suggestion of renaming Normal.dot to OldNormal.dot and copying
autotext entries from OldNormal.dot to Normal.dot but exactly the same thing
happens when I try to do this, that is the little hour glass curser just
keeps going and I get this programme not responding.

Were you able to access the built-in AutoText entries before you
copied your custom AutoText entries using the Organizer?

You may need to rename Normal.dot again and check the AutoText menu.
If you can access the newly created built-in entries then it could be
your custom AutoText entries are corrupt.

This is something that needs to be determined prior to checking out
other possibilities.

Yes, built-in autotext in new template do work. Have tried to copy my
customized autotext intries into new template but the same thing happens,
that is I get programme not responding, so from what you are saying it sounds
as if my autotext entries are corrupted - how do I find out if they are
please?

B

Beth Melton

The fact that you can see your built-in entries but when you copy your
custom entries you can no longer access the AutoText menus indicates
they are corrupt.

What you can do, depending on the number of AutoText entries you have
this could take some time, is copy a few at a time and check the
AutoText menus after each copy in order to determine if there is a
specific entry that is corrupt.
