Can't get ANY Microsoft Updates

S

steve.sande

I've had an interesting problem the last couple of weeks. Neither
Microsoft Office AutoUpdate nor trying to download updates from the
Microsoft Mac site work. If I try AutoUpdate, it tells me that the
connection was interrupted (it DOES manage to show me what updates are
available). When I try downloading updates from the MS Mac website, I
get messages similar to this:

Safari can't open the page
"http://download.microsoft.com/downl...955E-AF8525575C27/Office2004-1130UpdateEN.dmg"
because it can't find the server "download.microsoft.com".

I got the same thing from Firefox. I even tried downloading using
Windows XP on my wife's laptop with no luck at all. If I try pinging
download.microsoft.com, it's like the server doesn't exist. I've tried
this with Mac OS X Firewall shut down to see if that would make a
difference, and it doesn't.

Hellllllp!

Hi Steve:

All I can say is that it works fine in both Safari and FireFox here.

If it shows you what updates are available, then the firewall is fine and
it's local network conditions that are hammering it.

However, the fact that it can't find download.microsoft.com indicates that
your Domain Name Server is not resolving correctly. It should resolve to
208.187.212.200. Check your internet connection is pointing at the correct
Domain Name Server.

Cheers

John & all-

I am having the same problems. When I try to follow the English dmg
links from both
http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downlo...n=/mac/download/misc/messenger60_download.xml
and
http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downlo...004_1130.xml&secid=4&ssid=31&flgnosysreq=True
I get this message:

Safari can't open the page
"http://download.microsoft.com/downl...955E-AF8525575C27/Office2004-1130UpdateEN.dmg"
because it can't find the server "download.microsoft.com".

I also tried using the IP address you gave in your reply post
(208.187.212.200 as
http://208.187.212.200/download/0/0...955E-AF8525575C27/Office2004-1130UpdateEN.dmg)
and got this message:

Don't know what to tell you - I just clicked the link in my last post & the
English 11.3.0 update is downloading as I type... No problem whatsoever.

Yeah, you can't string the IP address into the URL like that, because it's
an Active Server page that requires parameters. Use the IP address only to
ensure that you can see the server at all. (The IP address is different
today: Microsoft hops around all over the place to avoid Denial of Service
attacks...)

This is the URL:
load/office2004/Office2004_1130.xml&secid=4&ssid=31&flgnosysreq=True>

Whenever I click that, it just works. I find it interesting that both
posters who are having trouble are coming in from G-Mail addresses. I know
the two companies are the deadliest of competitors, but they wouldn¹t...
Would they??? :)
