Can't get in; password

This issue has been ongoing.

When I attempt to go onto Project Web Access (projweb01), I get a 3x3 box
which has "Connect to PROJWEB01" at the top. Below that is a silver and gold
key. Below that it says "Connecting to projweb01". Below that is a place
for a User name and Password. Both are blank.

When I click cancel 3 times, I can get access to Project Web Access. When I
click on anything else, the same thing in the paragraph above appears, and I
must hit Cancel 3 times to move on.

I had the MS vendor who installed the product look at it, and they could not
figure it out.

The only way to stop it before was to have my laptop rebuilt. It worked
fine for about one month, and now the problem is back. When I shut this
machine down last night, it worked perfect. Upon logging in this morning,
the problem is back. A coworker is able to successfully access they system.

If anyone has an idea of how to fix this problem, please advise.

My organization and indeed me are in the process of deciding if MS Server is
the product we would like to take company wide for our Project Management
needs, potentially 66,000 employees worldwide. Given that this issue
continues and that the MS vendor did not have an answer, we are not very
pleased.

Thank you very much. Any ideas as to a solution will be appreciated.

What is your network operating system? Are you on the same domain as Project
Server? Would your organization consider switching to a vendor who can solve
this problem?

We are on Windows XP 200
I do not know what you mean with the domain question.
Feel free to add the name of your company in a reply, and I'll check your
firm out.

Another thought on this. When the system workes properly, it does not ask
for my password or user name. How do I find out what this is?

I have forwarded your situation description to my Server tech expert. We
have seen similar (not identical) problems before, and they often trace back
to a client's security infrastructure, or to network changes or push
installations that were not fully tested. That's not my area of expertise,
so I'll await input from my experts.

Occasionally, Project Server will hang on its login, but not in the way you
described. I don't think the problem is Project's "fault" though I realize
that is small comfort; you just want a system that works.

Regarding domains, a quick check would be to look in your Enterprise
Resource Pool at the Windows ID field, and see if your domain (the portion
preceding your ID) is different from the domains of other users who do not
have the problem.

Please contact me offline for company info, references, etc. Meanwhile,
I'll see what our people think about the problem.

Here are the ideas we have so far. Please understand that without access to
your computer, we are having to do some educated guessing.

Idea 1:
If we assume the user is in a Microsoft network and the account he logs into
his computer with is a member of a trusted domain: It could be that the user
logged into another IE site with a different user name. This name is then
cached and IE tries to use this ID to access PWA. Clearing their IE cache
could clear the issue.

Idea 2:
When prompted with the logon box, has the user ever tried entering his
domain\userid and password? If so, did the system accept it? This has also
worked to reset the cache.

Idea 3:
From a domain perspective, there are also some considerations. If the
company is in the process of migrating from Window 2000 to Windows 2003 at
the domain level, there are some methods that companies may use to help in
the migration that affect the user’s GUID, causing confusion in some MS
applications. This idea seems less likely since other users are not
reporting the same problem.

Cache has been cleared.
User ID and password entered, but not accepted. No one else is prompted for
a password
No migration is in process.

No one has an idea over here of how to fix it.

Thanks anyway.

I do not have any nonstandard toolbars in IE.

Here's an interesting find. I receive the 3x3 box (see my first posting)
requesting a user ID and password when I go into our server address of:
http://projweb01/projectserver/Home/HomePage.asp

A co worker however only receives the 3x3 box when he goes to a shortened
address of:
http://projweb01
His user name/ID does not work when entered. I receive the same 3x3 box
with whichever address I use. The coworker does not receive the 3x3 box when
he uses the longer address.

Yesterday I deactivated my MS Project Server account using another ID to
enter Admin. Upon reactivating my account, the problem remained. I also
deleted myself from MS Project Server, however upon adding myself back in,
the problem continued.

I truly appreciate all the suggestions. As to a solution, perhaps only The
Shadow Knows.

I had the same problem before. Check followings;

A. Check your PC IE settings

1. Make sure your add " http://projweb01/projectserver" into your trusted
sites

Inside IE - Tools -> "Internet Options" -> Security -> "Trusted Sites" ->
Sites -> Add (If http://projwebb01 isn't there)

2. Inside your trusted site - Click "Custom Level" Make sure every options
are either Enable or Prompt.
Important: Make sure the options for "User Authentication - > Logon" is
checked for "Automatic logon with current useranme and password"

Check for B only if every user has problem logging in WPA using Windows
Authentication.

B. Check your IIS 6.0 Settings

1. Use IIS manager, check the "Web Sites" -> Right Click "Default Web Site"
-> Properties - > "Directory Security" -> Edit (For Authentication and access
control) -> make sure "Enable anonymous access" uncheck

2. Do the same check for the Projectserver Virtual Directory within the
"Default Web Site" as well.

I hope that it could help.

Strange thing is that when I put http://projweb01/projectserver in as a
trusted site, click OK, only http://projweb01 ends up showing up.

Many of the Custom Levels were listed as disabled, so I changed those.

I am not familiar with IIS 6.0 Settings, however, and am not sure hwere this
is located.

Thank you very much.

I wa talking to one of my clients yesterday, and I mentioned the problem, and
the "Cancel 3 times" thing. She said she had the same problem at a previous
employer.

She said it is not a Project-specific problem; it happens with other apps as
well.

She could not recall the exact fix, but said she would try to find out. She
did say she recalled the solution had to do with a simple registry fix that
the IT department handled. She wasn't sure, but thought the problem might
have been caused by incomplete uninstall of software. Since you had your
machine completely rebuilt, that seems an unlikely cause in your case.

I'll let you know if I find out more useful details.

I am also experiencing this problem and our company has for othe
applications. We believe it is a 2003 token bloat issue and ar
currently getting a fix for this. Will let you know of the outcome

We located the problem.

Using Internet Explorer under VIEW, EXPLORER, the DISCUSS item was checked
off. I would be extremely linterested in earning from anyone about how this
could cause the problem.

Thanks.

Well we have the same problem and the Discuss option is not checked. The only
real solution i've found is to delete the local windows profile and create a
new one. This is a pain and far to much work. If someone finds an easier fix
please continue this thread.
