Can't get rid of paragraph symbol

J

jane

Hi,

In Word 2002 I seem to have a permanent paragraph symbol
at the beginning of every new document. I've
tried 'cut', 'backspace', 'delete', 'show/hide'
uninstalling and reinstalling the Microsoft Works program
and it still comes back. Should I try
uninstalling/reinstalling again? Anyone else have any
ideas?

Thanks,

Jane

Jane,

Look at Tools>Options>View>Formatting Marks and see if "paragraph marks" is
checked. If it is, uncheck it. The show/hide formatting marks does not
affect any mark that is permanently checked in this setting.

Greg,

You started me on my way and I can't thank you enough. I
unchecked the "paragraph marks" and that didn't do it.
But then when I also unchecked "all" that took care of
it.

Again thank you,

Jane

Jane,

The show/hide toggles the "all" setting on and off. However if one of the
others are checked (e.g., paragraph marks) then the checked feature will
continue to display regardless of the "all" setting. It is weird, but it is
the way of the world (at least the Word world).

And although you probably didn't want any more advice, there is a lot to be
said for setting up so that the paragraph marks *do* show up. Being able to
see them on the screen is often quite helpful when trying to edit, figure
out why something strange is happening, etc.
