Can't hide standard items on "My Places" bar

Microsoft's Knowledge Base Article 282087 describes how
to add a "Show" key for each of the "Standard Places"
that appear on Microsoft Office applications' Open dialog
box.

However, even when you set up a DWORD "Show" key with a
value of "0", and do a restart, all 5 standard items with
a "Show" key of "0" still appear in Word and in other
Office applications. I'm running Microsoft Office XP
Professional with all service packs and all updates
applied. I'm also familiar with Regedit, and have gone
back and verified that each of the 5 keys is set exactly
as specified.

Sorry. I thought it would be clear when I indicated I had
Office XP Professional with all service packs and
updates. I have Word 2002 (10.5815.4219)SP-2.

Sorry Jerry! I completely missed the version in your post. My bad. :-(

I do not think article clear. Under the StandardPlaces key there are
subkeys present for the default places and they should have a Show
value.

For example you need if you want to hide the Desktop then navigate to:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Common\Open
Find\Places\StandardPlaces\Desktop

And change the Show value to 0.

Is this what you are doing or are you adding a DWord under
StandardPlaces?

Also note you can use Romke Soldaat's Place Bar Customizer to make
these changes for you. It can be downloaded from:
http://word.mvps.org/faqs/customization/CstmzeWd2kOpenSaveDlgs.htm

Note it was written for Office 2000 but all it takes is a minor edit
in the code and it will work for Office XP. Just let me know and I can
provide the information on the change you need to make.

Beth,

I owe you an apology. This was my mistake. I'd always
thought XP "limited users" couldn't update the registry,
so in the past I've always changed my everyday account to
an Admin account befure using Regedit. This time, I did
a "run as" on Regedit using an Administrator account. Of
course, this updated the Administrator account's keys and
not the account's that I use for everyday use. Dumb.

Thanks for your kind attempt to help me. I discovered my
error when I went back into Regedit to check the keys
after viewing your message.

Hi Jerry,

I'm glad to hear the issue was resolved. :)

No apology necessary though. Plus this thread has led me to request an
update to a vague KB article. :)
