Can't insert .eps files in Word 2004

T

Tom

Hello,

Actually, I CAN insert .eps files in Word, but they don't show up.
Other files (.jpg, .tif, etc.) insert adn show on the page just fine,
but all I see with .eps files is a box that defines the graphic size.

We have a lot of .eps files to use, so this would be important to us to
fix this glitch. Any recommendations???

Thanks!!!
Tom

Hi Tom -

From Word Help:
I see a box or text where my EPSF picture should be.
Encapsulated PostScript File (EPSF) pictures must be saved with a TIFF- or
PICT-format preview image before you can view them in a Microsoft Office
program. If your EPSF file does not have a preview image, you will see a
placeholder box or text where you insert it into your document. If you print
the document to a PostScript printer, your EPSF picture will print out
correctly. Use a graphics conversion program to resave your EPSF picture with
a preview image if you want to be able to view the picture correctly on
screen.
Note Office programs will not display EPSF pictures with WMF-format preview
images.

Hi Tom -

From Word Help:

To add to Taz's excellent advice, I don't believe Windows Word is all
that happy with PICT previews, even though they look best on Macs.

For adding tiff previews, avoid GraphicConverter if you want it to look
good on screen because it makes really scratchy ones, bbut you can do
them all in one batch. Sadly, I can't think of a better way if you have
hundreds of preview-free EPS files.

You should check it is not Word refusing to show the previews you
really have. It is unbelieveably picky, though to be fair, eps previews
are a nightmare for everyone.

Finally, if you print to PDF from Word, you are in for another shock.
Word sends the scratchy previews! The workaround is to choose PDF as
Postscript, then open the .ps in Preview.app and save *that* as PDF. It
is worth persevering with, the result is lovely!

You could use Photoshop to do a batch convert from eps to another compatible
format - ie jpeg, gif etc...
