Can't Install Office 2003

I just bought a new laptop. In addition, I bought MS Office 2003 "Student
and Teacher Edition." It will not install. In fact, it barely gets started
and does not (as far as I can tell) create a log file. There's a screen to
select the products you want to install, then there's a screen with one of
those moving bars that's supposed to indicate progress, then it throws up a
message saying "Microsoft Office setup did not complete successfully. We
apologize for the inconvenience."

Just to let you know your'e not alone. I'm sorry I can't help but I have a
very similar problem.

I purchased a copy Office Professional 2003 under the Home Use program to
replace my copy of Office 2000. I tried installing Office 2003 and got a
series of Error 1406 messages saying that certain values could not be writen
to the registry key and that I might not have sufficient privileges to update
the registry. I clicked on Ignore for each message. I then then got a final
Error 1923 message saying service 'Office Source Engine' could not be
installed, verify you have sufficient privileges to install system services.
I then got the same message "Microsoft Office setup did not complete
successfully. We
apologize for the inconvenience."

I was mostly a victim of my own foolishness (or stupidty -- take your pick).
I'll try to keep a tiresome story short, but the problem I had when I posted
earlier was apparently due to a pre-existing "trial" version of Office 2003
that I'd been unable to get to work. When I uninstalled the "trial"
version, the package of Office that I was trying to install went much
further. But then it choked on those 1406 errors you mention. I learned
more about registry "permissions" than I ever knew before, and the
permissions for the relevant registry buckets appeared to me to already be
OK ("administrator," with all rights). But I never could get past the 1406
errors cleanly. I finally decided to press "ignore" on the error messages,
and the install completed, and Office 2003 now works on my laptop. But I'm
sure the install worked only because the "trial" version of Office had
already put in the necessary registry entries. If I were installing it on a
clean machine, it would not have completed, and I would have had no
solution.
