Well I have 98SE and running Office 97 Prof. I have tried
without success to install Office XP. I first removed Office 97
Prof. using add/delete function under control panel. Office 97
appear to be gone. Opening an excel document I get cant find
application..that s good. Still dont understand why I cant
install Office XL. I am wondering if I have 97 Office Prof maybe I
cant not install a lower grade upgrade, e.., I must install
Office XP Prof ?. If so how does 98SE know ?.

Office XP (any edition) can install over top of or beside Office 97
professional. The installation problem you are experiencing is probably not
related to having an earlier version of Office installed.

While 98SE is a qualifying OS for XP, I don't have any systems left with
that on it so I can only speculate. I have at work a machine with Office
'97 Pro, Office 2000, Office XP and Office 2003 installed on Win 2000 Pro
OS. At home I have the same configuration with the addition of Office 2007
on desktop and laptop systems with XP Home and XP Pro OS without any issues.

What error messages or any other information relating to "without success to
install Office XP." can you give. This would be the first step in solving
your issues.

Well for the near term I have given up but I will try again. After
I find out what I have done to my Office 97 Pro install. When I
select one of the short cuts say New Appointment I get an error
message C:\program files\microsoft office\office\outlook.exe A
device connected to the system is not working. When I OK I get
another message "The output.DLL file is linked to missing export
MAPl32.dll:36. Not sure what going on here. Do I need to get that
dll and put it someplace ?.

This may be a long shot but have you at some time installed another email
app to try? Some of them install their own version of mapi32.dll - they
'should' restore the previous version when they're un-installed. Otherwise
it may be corrupt in which case dig out your Windows install CD, open a
command prompt and run the System File Checker:

sfc /?

will show the various flags. That will replace any damaged system files.
